My baby grew up: what to do with the clothes that got too small?

Some claim that a family can spend up to 10% of their income buying clothes for a newborn. However, babies grow up quickly and the question soon arises: what to do with the clothes that have become too small?

Baby clothes, especially the first ones, are an emotional and financial milestone for any mother. On the one hand, they are products purchased at a certain sacrifice. On the other hand, they are the first clothes worn by this new member of the family.

When it comes to the first child, the apprehension can be even greater. But actually, when clothes no longer fit, we can still do a lot with them. The important thing is to understand that it is a reusable material, in every way.

Weighing between remembrance and usefulness

After a few months, or even after the first two years, there will be a  lot of clothes that we won’t know what to do with. There will be many pieces left, and it’s important to know how to organize ourselves.

No doubt there are things that will remain simply for the memories. But the question is how do we want to remember. Everything will depend on the sentimental value of each piece, its meaning and our inventiveness.

On the other hand, there will be parts that can also be reused in many ways. Therefore, we must first classify all the material in order of importance, cost and even wear. This will help us form a criterion.

There are clothes you don’t forget

Baby’s first pajamas, gloves and little shoes. These are the things most moms just keep in a drawer. Here also appear some iconic clothes and things that have a purely sentimental value.

It is important to consider that they are pieces that hold the essence of a new life that has come into the world. Each mother will have her own particular and even religious appreciation for what to do with them.

A great idea is to make a souvenir pack. We are referring to separating a well-prepared and decorated drawer, where we can also store photos. In it, we can even keep the baby teeth or the umbilical cord.

Baby clothes? Not everything can be saved

Of course, we shouldn’t keep all the clothes that are too small for the baby. One sample is more than enough so that, in the future, he can see how things were during his first months of life.

To tell the truth,  many of the pieces can be reused, some with a more practical sense, while others in a more creative way. We can also be charitable and allow other children to enjoy what our babies had.

Some shirts can be reinvented and made into T-shirts. Thus, it is possible to extend its useful life. For that, we just need a pair of scissors and know where to cut. Other more deteriorated pieces can be transformed into future cloths and bibs.

Three Ways to Sell Baby Clothes That Got Small

In addition to what we mentioned earlier,  there will be a part of the clothes that we can reinvest. The current market offers us, in principle, three ways to make this type of transaction. Undoubtedly, the best thing is to negotiate what has less sentimental value:

  • Rescue the deteriorated: there are companies that allow us to exchange worn and even stained clothes for discounts in their stores. In this case, we should research which ones offer this service.
  • Sell what was not used: there are always those clothes that, for one reason or another, the baby didn’t even wear. We can resell many of them, as long as they are in perfect condition and attractive.
  • Exchanges: with the emergence of the internet, exchange groups were born. You can join some and look for used things that might be useful. If it’s done between friends, so much better.

leave room for charity

Clothes that are too small for the baby can also end up being a donation. Remember that there are always people with limited resources who may need them more than we do.

To contribute to charity, it is always possible to go to a church or locate a family that needs these clothes. There are many places to make this type of donation: hospitals, schools, NGOs,  government agencies,  etc.

The most important thing is to categorize each piece and put them to good use. It must be remembered that, after preserving, reusing, selling or donating, it would be good to set aside one last gift. We can keep something from our baby so he can give it to his own children when he has them.
