Candy cake: what is it?

First, let’s talk a little about the famous candy cakes. Basically, as the name implies, it is a cake that is not made with the typical sponge cake or whipped cream, but with a combination of different sweets.

For example, you can opt for gums, marshmallows and other “soft” sweets and combine them with “hard” ones such as candies and lollipops. Best of all, the sweet cakes are very easy to make  and each guest can take a souvenir piece to enjoy later at home.

This way, we avoid leaving half the cake unserved, something very common in birthday parties, baptisms, first communion, etc.

Baking a candy cake is simpler than you might think and, besides, it’s also a super original idea for your kids’ next party. There is no need to adopt the classic shape of a cake, as it can be made with different shapes, such as a boat, a football field or a heart. You can even match it to the party’s decor or theme!

Steps to Bake a Candy Cake

Ingredients

To make the candy cake, you need to use a Styrofoam base, which can be found at any party supply store, in different sizes and shapes. That’s what you need to get started.

You will also need gummies, marshmallows, lollipops and some packaged sweets such as chocolates or mints. In addition, you will also need large rubber bands, toothpicks, aluminum foil and decorative ribbons.

Some people use royal icing to glue candy to the base, especially if there are a lot of small children at the party, to prevent them from eating the toothpick.

Preparation mode

Now that you have all the materials you need, let’s get to work to make a candy cake:

  • Place the base on a table or a place where you can work comfortably. Cover with aluminum foil, to facilitate the removal of the sweets when distributing them.
  • Sort candies by size. First place the largest ones to form the “cake”. Use large rubber bands or toothpicks to hold them together.
  • Place medium and small candies between the remaining spaces . Don’t forget to secure them properly so they don’t fall out.
  • To finish the creation, cover it with ribbons or any other element you like.
  • If it is too hot, it  is advisable to keep the cake in the fridge until party time.
  • Remember to consider where you will place the candle or whether there will be a small cake for the birthday person to blow out the candles and request their three wishes.
  • When cutting the cake of sweets, separate portions with two or three large sweets. Just drop them and place them on a plate or napkin.

How to make a multi-story candy cake

Do you want to make a little more complex decoration for your child’s birthday cake? So we recommend that you build one with multiple floors. Come on!

You will need four circular bases, one of each size: 10, 15, 20 and 30 cm in diameter, aluminum foil, colored toothpicks, 3 kg of assorted candy (including marshmallows) and 6 lollipops.

First, cover the bases with aluminum foil and assemble a pyramid with them (largest to smallest). Stick the marshmallows with the colored sticks and attach them to all the edges of the floors. On each ‘step’, add the sweets in a combined way. Finally, upstairs, stick the lollipops. That way, your candy cake will be ready!

Any space that is visible can be covered with small candy. If you want, you can also decorate with a colored ribbon. Your child and guests will love this fun and unusual cake, which only took a few minutes to make. You can even save foundations for other family events or crafts.
