How To Boost Your Child’s Cognitive Development
To encourage your child’s cognitive development, in Sou Mama we present you with some exercises. But first we want you to consider these three pieces of advice:
Number 1
: Be patient. Your child may take some time to work through the exercises, or may start crying whenever he can’t. Your attitude here should be that of a teacher: guide, calm down, explain as often as necessary and show new ways to solve the problem.
Number 2
: Don’t solve what it can solve itself. Give the child the opportunity to experiment and find a solution that feels right, one that feels best to him. Don’t constantly tell which way to go.
Number 3
: Don’t scold or yell at him when you make a mistake. Allow him to make mistakes and learn from them.
Games for the cognitive development of children under 5 years old
Teach your 2-year-old child colors
For your 2-year-old to learn colors, there are different ways to teach. We suggest the following:
- Look for several sheets so you can cut out colored pictures.
- For your child to learn to identify yellow, cut out, for example, a sun and a banana.
- Green you can represent as a plant, a frog and an avocado.
- For red, you need figures like a red rose, a heart, and an apple.
Anyway, make several samples of different colors. When you have them all, sit down with your child and spread the cutouts across the floor so the colors blend together. Little by little, gather the figures of the same color as you say the name of the figure and the color it has.
In the beginning only you can do this. But over time and with practice, your child will learn to identify both the color and the name of the figure and will even be able to group them according to the colors they have.
To facilitate the activity, it is important that you start with 2 or 3 colors. After the child learns, he can increment the number.
Teach your 3-year-old the letters of the alphabet
Another possible game for your 3-year-old child’s cognitive development is learning the letters.
For that, we recommend looking for colored figures and objects that he knows. Your names must start with the same letter.
- Suppose you want to teach the consonant B.
- To do this, draw a large, colored letter B on a piece of paper. Next, look for a ball and a picture of your baby boy. If he already knows the sound emitted by sheep, you can also look for a sheet that contains the image of that animal.
- When you have the materials, sit down with your child and name each object as you show the pictures to him and say that this is the letter B. Letter with which the words you are enunciating begin.
- -Ball, Baby, Beeeee! –
Teach your 4-year-old to rhyme words
Rhyming words is fun. For this activity, you just need to find words that your 4-year-old knows and that are easy for him.
You should also keep in mind words that rhyme with those you have intended for the game, because often your child will need you to give him some other clue.
- Suppose you say the word: hand.
- So, you ask him to say another one that rhymes with her.
- He can say: bread, ground, thunder…
- If he can’t find any, you can make, for example, a gesture from where you are stepping for him to find the word.
Mom, you should know that these and any other interactive exercises that enable the child to reason, analyze what happens, memorize and use the knowledge learned for problem solving will be ideal for promoting their cognitive development.
Take a special interest in developing the activities you choose. Early learning makes your child better prepared to face all the subjects that await him in his future school life.
